Meditation on Impermanence

Much of our pain arises from attachment and desire, from clinging to people, things, or unattainable wishes.

The loss of a loved one, the next career step that was sought but ultimately not achieved, the constant pursuit of possessions – all too often, such things shape our daily lives. Only a deep contemplation of the impermanence of all life and all things allows us to recognize what truly matters in life. How do we want to use the time we are given? How do we want to shape our relationships with our fellow human beings, other living creatures, and nature? What gives us deep inner satisfaction?

Through the meditation presented here, it becomes possible to let go and open the heart to love and compassion. It is in the hands of each of us to give our life a good direction and to contribute to a peaceful and harmonious coexistence.

Instructions for Performing the Meditation

You can practice the meditation sitting on a chair or on the floor. If you are sitting on a chair, place your feet shoulder-width apart and parallel to each other. If you are practicing sitting on the floor, you can meditate in the lotus position, half-lotus position, or cross-legged.

Once you have taken a comfortable sitting position, place your hands relaxed on your thighs with the palms facing downward. Alternatively, you can place your hands one over the other on the lower abdomen. Women place the right hand directly on the body and the left hand over it; men do the opposite.

Sit completely relaxed. Close your eyes and gently place the tip of your tongue against your upper palate. Smile. Then, accompanied by the audio file, begin the meditation.

To conclude the meditation, gently rub your hands together, lightly massage your face, head, ears, and neck, and stroke your lower back a few times with your palms.

The meditation presented above is available free of charge to all people. Commercial use or trade is not permitted. All rights remain with Buyin Zheng.
